This training will consider the inter-relationship between evidence and “unused material”. The training will assist in enabling officers to identify what information may be relevant in terms of the active issues in a case and the rules concerning the recording and retention of that relevant information. The training will look at the distinct separate stages of (1) recording and assessing information and (2) disclosure of information. Examples and scenarios will be given of different types of information and how these types of information should be assessed and split into one of the 3 categories of unused material, being (1) undermining material, (2) sensitive information and (3) other relevant retained materials. The training will then consider both proactive and “primary disclosure” requirements, with guidance on how information is to be recorded on the required disclosure schedules. There will also be discussion of the roles of the investigating officer, officer in charge and disclosure officer in the context of local authority casework.
